After a historic US presidential race that ended in a shocking victory for Republican candidate Donald Trump, it took a while for the result to sink in – not only for Americans, but for the world over. Trump ran his campaign on various controversial issues such wanting to build a wall on the Mexico border so as to keep Mexicans out, stopping immigration from countries that have had a history promoting terrorism, ban Muslims from entering the US, repealing everything Obama’s done so far and replacing them with ‘better stuff’. Well, the fact that the Canadian immigration website crashed as soon as Trump started gaining ground late Tuesday night is indication enough on the kind of turmoil a huge chunk of non-white Americans are going through.
Anti-Trump protests have already started in the country, and the online space – which spent much of November 9 in shock and then lamenting over what happened, has now taken up another cause – Michelle Obama for President in 2020. It hadn’t been even 24 hours that president-elect Trump had given his victory speech, let alone assume office, that people started blanking out the next four years and jump to 2020, when they want an Obama in the White House again, this time Michelle.
Not that this idea is particularly new. Hillary Clinton wasn’t a very popular Democratic candidate either, and murmurs of Michelle Obama in 2020 had begun long before, but the idea took off once Trump was elected the 45th President of the US. The hashtag #Michelle2020 started picking up traction, with more and more people adding their voice and support to the movement.
